Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie here -- my friend introduced me to this site hoping that I might be able to find some people that I could relate to and that might be able to help me out.

I am a 25 year old woman who suffers from Night Terrors. I've had them for the last couple of years and they've gotten progressively worse over time. Up until recently I didn't know what they were and I only just found out that they have a name and others suffer from it too.

A couple people tried to dismiss it telling me that Night Terrors only occur in children, but I know what happens to me. I only remember the very last couple of seconds once I wake up, and my heart is racing, my blood feels cold, I'm usually shaking and screaming out. I am almost always up and out of bed, and the last couple episodes I've found myself unlocking my front door trying to run out.

I never remember the dream itself, but I sometimes have strong visualizations. Once I "woke up" to find myself standing on my couch grabbing at the curtains on the window behind my bed and screaming. I thought that there was a giant black rat running across the top of my curtain rod. A couple nights later I had another episode where I thought a spider was dropping down from the ceiling onto me -- this time I couldn't move, all I could do was lay there helplessly screaming until it was over.

The most horrible one occured a couple weeks ago. That's when I found myself trying to leave the house and I was yelling "Go away, stop staring at me!" and I swore to God that there had been a man standing there watching me. The room had this really scary feel to it.

It's gotten to the point where I don't want to go to sleep at night, and I have trained my body not to sleep for more than 45 minutes to an hour at a time. These episodes only occur when I've been asleep for over an hour, and I've read that's because that is when your body is in stage 4 of sleep, or deep sleep.

I am severely sleep deprived, can't function during the day, and am terrified to sleep for fear that I will have another episode.

It's nearly impossible to find information on Night Terrors in adults, and I was just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with it, or knows of someone who has.

I have an appointment with a sleep disorder clinic on September 22.
