For a very long time now I wake up every night about 4-5 hours after I go to sleep, then it is hard for me to fall back asleep again. I have no trouble falling asleep initially. At first my doc had me try Trazodone but after almost a week it's had no effect on helping me sleep through the entire night, I still wake up like clockwork even though I'm very groggy due to the Trazodone. And I am not waking up to use the bathroom or because of noises, although I am a light sleeper.

So my dr switched me to Zaleplon (Sonata), which I tried for the first time last night, and I was shocked at how ineffective it was. I took 10mg and hardly felt anything, and was desperate to fall back asleep, so I took another 10mg and couldn't believe how "normal" I felt. What's up with that? He prescribed it specifically for when I wake up in the middle of the night so that I can fall asleep quickly again.

Does this take a few days to work or something? I thought it was like a benzo and would just work immediately. I wound up taking .5mg Xanax after the 20mg of Zaleplon failed to help. I told my doc I don't want to take Xanax for sleep, but it seems to be the only thing that works (so far).

Thanks.
