Smoking Cessation Board Index

Hi there! Newbie here too. My name is Dixie. Monday I will be smoke free for 4 weeks!! Whoo Hoo! I just found this site today and have been reading all the great comments. I look forward to the support here and hope I can contribute as well. I had been smoking for about 30 years and almost 2 packs a day.

My first week on Chantix was fine. No side effects that I noticed. When I went to the 1mg twice daily, things started to change. I had headaches every day for the first week. I was crabby and very tired.

During the second week the headaches went away and most of the crabiness. As a matter of fact a few guys in the office asked if I had still quit smoking.

My worst side effect is being tired. Really tired. I typically sleep 6 hours a night. Now I am sleeping 8 hours and sometimes need a quick nap after work. What is up with that? Even when I wake in the morning I feel a little groggy. It takes me about 20 minutes to shake it off. Normally I am a morning person too. I'm starting to think I think of sleep more than cigs.

I went to the DR Thursday for another follow up appointment. I am now suffering from a little water retention. My DR started me on a mild lasix and we will see how things are in a month.

I am so surprised this has been so easy. I thought I would be pulling my hair out and every one else's that I know by now. Well, I'm not bald yet. During the day I don't even think about smoking. I love that my car stays clean and smells nice. The only time I really want a cig is late in the evening when I am unwinding. I think about them then.

If being tired and retaining a little water is the worst that happens, I have no complaints. I'm just keeping in mind this should be temporary and should quit once I go off the meds. It's nothing I can't deal with. It's worth it to me to not smoke.

Congrats to all of you who have started this journey of being smoke free. I look forward to getting to know you all. :)
Hello everyone,

I'm on day 8 and I'm not smoking!! This is absolutely amazing - I had smoked at least a pack a day for over 30 years. I was extremely nervous to start the Chantix more because I was so afraid to be without my cigs (they were almost a best friend) and I was worried I would fail. After 5 1/2 days I took my last puff and I can honestly say I don't miss it at all. I have tolerable cravings and I do miss it but I am never smoking again. The side effects haven't been horrible except for being VERY tired. I happened to get strep throat and a sinus infection on day 2 so sleeping has been difficult and from what I have read the Chantix can cause insomnia. I'm hoping by the end of the week things will improve and I won't feel so exhausted. I haven't had any stomach problems which I did expect - I take my pills with a container of yogurt and lots of water. If anyone has any suggestions for the exhaustion I'd love to hear them.

Best of luck to everyone,
