I had one level ACDF with donor bone and plating. No collar. My surgery was at 4:00 in the afternoon and they had me out the door by 10:00 the next morning. I felt ready, though. Had bad nausea/vomiting through the night from the anesthesia (vomiting after this surgery is a scary thing), but I had only a very mild sore throat and no trouble swallowing. Was able to eat and early breakfast that morning no problem.

It did take me many months to completely recover, though. Although at six weeks I was basically back to regular activities, I still had residual pain and napped every afternoon. My only restrictions were on driving for two weeks and lifting heavy objects. It was probably a good six months before I felt "normal" again.

Anyway, recovery from this surgery varies tremendously and I sense it has a lot to do with how long you suffered with pain before the surgery. I only had pain for about a month. Be aware that although your doctor may clear you to travel, you just may not feel like it. It may also depend how much postop. pain you have, how many meds you have to take and how they affect you, etc... I know I would have had a hard time sitting in a car for any length of time but others may have different experiences. I think you're really going to have to wait and see how you do.

Best of luck to you!
