Hi--I had double discectomy, c5-c6 and c6-c7 with donor bone and plating on March 1st, almost four weeks ago. I also had some large osephytes removed--urgery took over 3 hours. I have considerable more pain in my neck and left shoulder blade, and also some pain on the right side of my neck. The numbness in my left arm and hand are also worse than prior to surgery.

Everything the doctors told me (I saw five before I decided to have the surgery) told me the pain goes away immediately after surgery, and then the numbness takes a bit longer to get better.

Do you vets of this surgery think it is normal for the pain and numbness to be worse 4 weeks post-op. I don't beleive I am getting the muscle spasms anymore but the shoulder pain certainly feels like the orignal nerve pain when I first injured the discs in May 2005. The pain did get about 50% better via two epidurals, and levelled off at that and was still to much to live with so I decided on the surgery.

I am doing the first follow up with my doc tomorrow and having x-rays done, but hoping some of you may be able to offer some good questions I shpuld ask the doc tomorrow given the increase in pain.
Thanks all.

JJ,

I have had TREMENDOUS help and support in my thread - very similar to yours from the sounds of things...

I invite you to read through it..

I am trying to focus on the idea that my post op pains are more spasm / muscle related and it seems to be helping.

I have been religious about heat / ice rotation and trying valium 5mg 2x a day to help fight off spasms.

It certainly seems to be helping.

Is it gone? No way. Can I deal with it on a daily basis now? Yea, I'm working on it.

Read through the thread... Lots of great advice / insight / advice.

I need to update it too with the information I just popped in here.

Also, are you wearing a collar? It "seems" that many people / some NS tend to believe that can lead to some muscle atrophy / spasms / pains etc... Perhaps that is your case as well? I'm not sure how much it attributed to mine, but I do feel like my pain level has gone from a constant 8 to a range from 2-6... Which is simply an amazing improvement.

Best of luck!
