Spinal Cord Disorders Message Board

Spinal Cord Disorders Board Index

Hi Guys, I am new to this board. I have posted on the back problem board for other issues.

Right now my main concern is my neck. As you can see, I already had a fusion at 3 levels about 7 years ago. Recently, I have had increased pain, headaches and tingling and numbness.

I had a myelogram and the findings were;

*Anterior cervical fusion at C4 to C7 with pseudarthrosis at C6-7.
*Severe disc dedgenerative change at C3-4 with retrolisthesis. There is a disc bulge and spur with central focality. There is moderate to severe central canal stenosis with mild flattening of the cord.
*Multilevel spur and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament behind the fusion at C4 to C7. There is effacement of the thecal sac and spinal cord, most marked at C5.

I am concerned about the part that says there is severe canal stenosis with mild flattening of the cord. But anyway, does anyone out there have a guess about my future???? Is surgery look inevitable. I go to the ortho nexrt week.

I would really appreciate any feedback or stories of your similar problems. I feel like I am sitting here all alone with no answers. :confused:

Hi, I'm new, too, but part of my MRI report and impression reads similarly to yours, so I thought I'd respond. I can't guess your future, of course, but loved your subject heading --made me chuckle and think of those 8-ball fortune tellers from the 70's when I was a kid. The part of my cervical MRI report that reads similarly to yours says, "severe canal stenosis with flattening of the spinal cord.. and vague increased T2 signal in the spinal cord at this level suggesting cord edema/myelomalacia". This is at the C5-6. I have problems with C2-3, 3-4, 4-5, & 6-7 also, but not at all like the 5-6. I would make a crude guess that you're in a bit better shape than I am since yours says 'moderate to severe' and 'mild flattening'. If so, maybe a less-invasive procedure or other treatment will be able to help you out, help you to avoid dropping the 'moderate to' part and the 'mild'. I don't know, though. I am having surgery -quite soon- and have been told my situation is somewhat urgent, but that also has to do with which disc it is and that it's compressing my full spinal cord (and herniated; also has 'moderate right greater than left foraminal narrowing, mainly from uncovertebral osteophytic spurring). My C4-5 also has "flattening of the ventral spinal cord" and my neurosurgeon is not worried about it at this time, is not going to operate on it when he goes in for 5-6. So, I'd guess that some cord flattening isn't as bad as others?? I don't think my response of any real help, unfortunately, but you did mention that you'd like to hear any stories of similar problems and I could identify with that one aspect of your MRI. I thought I could at least do that much. My story is still in the making, but I'm hoping to have a good result (shake that 8-ball for me, too, please).
Good luck, and I hope that you get the answers you're seeking when you see your Ortho. Have you seen a neurosurgeon yet?
