I Just had my ACDF surgery 5 days ago and everything seems to be going ok.But I do still get sore on the right side of my neck where I always hurt before and especially at the incision site in the front of my neck on the right it also gets very sore there also.Sometimes my whole neck all the way around hurts and I just wonder if this is just part of the healing process and does everyone feel this way.Today I bent over and washed my hair in the sink and needless to say how bad it hurt all over especially in the back and on my left side of my neck.I had a three level done and I guess I am just so anxious to go full blast once again. So my question is everything pain wise I feel normal and how long does it take for it to completely go away.I only wear my collar when I need to for my comfort and do not sleep in it as my spine specialist wants to do it that way.I do ice it down a lot though when it hurts. Thanks for any information that any one else experiences. Mike
Soreness is normal. But you shouldn't be hanging over a sink to wash your hair as you are putting huge strain on the neck. With three levels fused your body has to re-learn how to move the neck using muscles in new ways since there is a whole section of the cervical spine that no longer bends. Use the brace often, whenever you are upright, at least for the first few weeks. The best use of the brace is to keep you in correct alignment so you don't bend any directing that can cause pain. You want that fusion to take so you want to keep the neck in proper alignment.

Make sure you have a muscle relaxant and pain meds for when they are needed.

I will have my ACDF next month, November 8th, and I will tell you like everyone has told me....please take it slow and easy. You don't want to undo the fusion work that has taken place. It sometimes takes 6-12 months for complete fusion to take place. Good luck in the future....and take care.
I am a little late in responding, but haven't been online much lately. I had a two level ACDF on 10/19. I do feel much better post-surgery, but do have soreness and feel tired at times. I continue to take my pain meds on schedule to facilitate healing. I wear my brace 24/7, per my doctor's instructions and am taking care not to do anything that will impede my neck from fusing.

Take care and don't overdo it!!
