I'm 6 days post op from a C4-5 / C5-6 ACDF. As you, I'm experiencing a fair bit of pain in my shoulders and neck. Definitely starting to feel better though and sleeping ALOT better as well :) I think it just takes time and a positive attitude! Are you taking any medication? My throat is significantly better. My speech is good, however I still struggle a bit swallowing liquids; food is ok. I wear my collar 7x24 with the exception of taking a shower. That's my favourite time of the day! I could stay in there for an hour!! It's great to hear of someone in the same recovery period as I am. Please keep us updated on your progress. Keep positive and good luck. Time will heal

Hi you are having "normal" recovery issues. I had 2 level ACDF on 12/9/2010. You will have some good days and some not so good days. Just remember to listen to your body. DO not try and do too much. You have just has major surgery. It will take time for your body to adjust from the anesthesia and trauma from the surgery. Stay on top of the pain with the medication for a while. Do not wean yourself too quickly. Sleep and rest as much as you can. When you feel up to it take short walks and remember your posture. Feel better. :)
Hi I will be 6 months from a 2 level ACDF 5-6 6-7 in a week. Swallowing took a long time to get better. I had excessive swelling and needed steroids. There were food that I couldn't eat for months. Now I am much better, just have issues if I have used the bone growth stimulator prior to eating. I try to make sure that I don't use it for an hour or two before meals. There are times that I still feel as if areas in my neck are numb. I only used a hard collar for a few days and then the soft collar. Try to be as active as you can be during your recovery. My neck is still tight, ROM pretty good not great, still have muscle spasm (using Tens Unit), some issues with my left hand and shoulder. Ruled out Rheumatoid Arthritis but they think Raynauds. I am having a cervical x ray to see if I have an extra cervical rib (outside possibility) and issues can be attributed to TOS. Just tired of doctors. Good luck to you all :)

I'm very curious why you were required to use a bone growth stimulator? At what point did your NS determine that he/she wasn't happy with the bone growth? Were you a smoker? Did you take any ibuprofen Anti-Inflammatory Drugs post op? Although I HATE wearing an ASPEN Hard Collar 7x24 for 3 months my NS was absolutely adamant about this to promote proper healing. I am so anxious to see my x-rays in 3 weeks! I will be 12 weeks post op June 8th
