tetons~
The headaches you describe are "nerve" headaches. I had them before my surgery and still have them now(worse). I also suffer from migraines and same as you my migraine meds didn't work on this headache. I was on Neurontin pre surgery for them which did help but I hated the side effects. MY NS wants to do some injections once my collar comes off in hopes this will help those headaches and nerve pain.
Mention these headaches to your NS. He will help you decide what course of action is needed. Of course, each doctor is different so his diagnosis may be different than mine.

March,2003~started with muscle spasms, shoulder pain, arm pain
Perscribed muscle relaxers
a week later prescribed steroids, sent to PT, and for MRI which showed 3 bulging discs C3-4, C4-5, C5-6
May2003~2nd course of steroids, numbing, tingling in arm and fingers, nerve pain and headaches, stopped PT(due to worsening of symptoms), had EMG which showed nothing irregular
May2003~appt w/neurosurgeon, sent for myleogram which showed herniation at C5-6 with nerve compression,DDD,arthritis in spine
June30,2003~ACDF with fusion using donor bone, no hardware
presently losing my mind from doing absolutely nothing~

Being that a herniated disc was compressing my nerves, I would get shooting pain in neck and head. The headache stayed even after the "shooting" stopped. The area where the nerve pain was "pinching" is still affected(still pain) and I still have headaches. Pinched nerves can cause all sorts of trouble, a headache being one thing.

I hope this helped~

I guess I am fortunate. I have had acute esophagitis for years and my surgery didn't cause it to flare up.
Thank goodness because I think I have enough trouble!
My doc put me on muscle relaxers 3 times a day, along with pain meds. The muscle relaxers have helped to calm my spasms down. I don't like to take my pain meds either and have cut them down to basically 1 - 2 a day depending on what I do that day(after a car ride I always end up taking one). I'm not sure that the muscle relaxers would cause a headache, but the pain pills might if you were on them regularly and you have cut down on them(mild withdrawal).I still have the headaches and am hoping that the injections my NS is going to do will help those.
