... I am the wife of a 40 year old man that has had five lower back surgeries. He is suffering from failed back syndrome as a result of his first fusion. The best thing that you can do is remain nicotine free. My husband is a smoker and, even with the patch, for some reason, the nicotine impedes the fusion. Can I ask the name of the doctor who will perform your "redo surgery."... (10 replies)
... 8 months ago I had a fusion at L5-S1 to correct a fracture, Spondylolisthesis, and herniated disc. It was horrible and I never got better. I am now with a different (better) surgeon, and after more tests he is going to go in and fuse L4-L5 (it has a full thickness tear, disc disease, and caused 10/10 pain at a recent discogram) and re do the fusion at L5-S1, so now I am in... ... Hi, I posted a thread a month or so ago asking for advice on my back condition. Well finally after nearly a year and a half after my accident, I got somewhere with one doctor. He said that the only way to fix my back is the fuse the L4-5 vertebra together with an INFIX apparatus. I was just wondering if anyone had heard of this and if anyone has had this procedure done. My... (3 replies)
... My fiancee is scheduled for a fusion in a month. It will be an anterior and posterior surgery. He will eventually have to have L3-L4 fused as well. What is the success rate of this proceedure? How long, on average does it take to fuse? Being that the surgery itself is going to be in the front and the back, what other risks should we be aware of and what are the chances of... (1 replies)

... With a one level fusion the recovery time will be at least a few months. You can indeed be out of the hospital in a few days. Are they using hardware to fuse? The surgery can be painful so don't be shy about asking for pain meds but also be prepared to push through some pain. The worst pain is when you get out of bed the first time but you'll be amazed how much better... (11 replies)
... Hi Dredd, I had a L4-5 dischotomy in 2001 and a donor bone, plate and screws in C5-6 and will eventually have to have C6-7 done. Although I still smoke (yes, I know it is bad for me and terrible for my discs), I have remarkably been growing bone fairly quickly but was told by my neurosurgeon that bone growth continues for at least 1 1/2 years. It sounds like that part is ok... (12 replies)
... Hello, I am quite sure I have developed L'Hermitte's sign in the last 3 months. I've only learned of this 'sign' in the last 2 days. I have emailed my NS about this but I don't see him to talk about it until next Tuesday. It is a bit complicated... ... :) Hi Gerri, I agree with the recommendation to go to a neurologist who specializes in spine surgery. Also, it sounds like you need to have a discogram to determine the pain generator. I am having spinal fusion surgery on September 12 to fuse L4-L5, after about 20 years of increasing lower back and leg pain. I was, also, diagnosed with MS (over 40 lesions in the... (7 replies)
... Hello To One and All - I'm looking for some feedback/information from those of you who have had cervical epidurals as a first step in dealing with a herniated disk? I'm almost 6 weeks post-op for a second attempt to fuse L4-5. I am not in PT (yet) and have oxycodone and valium and neurontin for meds at this time. Had a cervical MRI in May that showed a herniation... (10 replies)

... Solar,I think the big difference in your case vs jsks is that you have the hardware to hold everything in place while things heal.and jsks is boppin around in there from time to time and possibly pressing on the many nerves down there.I had the same problem in my neck with a fusion surgery that did not fuse, and had the same type of sucks!personally, just from my... ... I wonder if the Reclast caused a temporary Vitamin D imbalance and that upped your pain. The calcium uses the D to allow it to absorb. ??? just guessing.
