TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Board Index

TMJ can cause severe ear pain along with neck, head, eye, facial and back pain
It can mimic ear infections, cause dizziness, off balance feeling, it can even mimic a tooth abscess
If antibiotics were taken and it didn't clear it up and have been told you have TMJ chances are you DO
In the past couple of months I have been to 6 so called specialists, have received 6 different prognosis and treatment plans with 6 completely different price structures
This is just my experience but I feel I have learned so much in the past several months and TMJ in my opinion is not something to mess with or worth waiting around to see if it gets better or goes away, if there is damage to the joint that can never be undone but continuing in pain without treatment can cause more damage in the long run
The very last Doctor I went to was the one that made the most sense to me and he was the longest wait to get into
In my 2 hour consult he explained everything to me in a way I actually understood what could be happening with my jaw and that he could not and would not diagnose or treat me without an MRI- very very important - the MRI has to be ordered for TMJ to get all the pictures needed of how the joint and muscles work together biting on a series of different width sticks for several minutes at a time- this makes a animated video of you actually opening and closing your mouth and showing the condition and placement of the joint itself along with all the muscles and the tendon
In review of my MRI I fortunately am not severe and it was explained to me why my pain is so severe....there is only 1 pocket of nerves and blood cells behind the jaw joint- the rest is all muscle, cartilage and tendon- my jaw locks back into that pocket which causes extreme shooting pain which is within centimeters of the ear and causes all kinds of radiating throbbing and pain then when it moves back out in not in severe pain but the inflammation is still there so there is always soreness and discomfort
He makes many orthodics for all different cases and the theory behind them is to position your jaw where it should be to keep it out of that pocket
My right side is at 12:00 which is where it should be and my left side is at 10:00- my right side gets sore from overuse staying off the left where I have most of the discomfort
I will have one for night, 1 for work use that is clear and you can talk with it and 1 for athletics that is soft
After I am stable for a very long time I may need mild orthodontics to keep me in place but that is a long road away
It was explained to me that moist heat is the best for pain- key here is moist....use a rice bag heated in the microwave and wrap it with a hot wet towel- the heat cannot be dry (heating pad)
I strongly recommend seeking a doctor your comfortable with that has the credentials to treat a joint problem along with dental - this guy I am going with is a dentist with a degree in orthopedics and dedicates most of his practice to TMJ seeing people from surrounding states and has an associate that does most of the dental work
I finally after way to long of wait will be fitted for my orthodics and going home with them the 26 of this month
