TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Board Index

Hi all,

I am currently in week 6 of TMJ treatment (wearing a bottom oral appliance to reposition my jaw). I have been struggling with swallowing difficulties, ear pain/congestion, constant popping and crackling sounds with jaw joint movement, numbness tingling in my left hand and feet. The most recent symptoms include strange facial numbing and tingling, sense of blockage in my nose. Has anyone experienced this? My TMJ specialist doesn't know what all of the facial symptoms are about. She suspected trigeminal nerve was impacted but I got an MRI done and cranial nerves are fine. I still feel like something is going on with the trigeminal nerve but maybe not showing up in the MRI. I'm unclear what this is all about and its causing me great anxiety and really interfering with my quality of life. I'm wondering if its just part of jaw realignment--hopefully it will go away. Any advice, recommendations or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for responding SoSayWeAll and Ctjackson. It helps to know that others are experiencing this as well.

My nose is slightly better after wearing the appliance for almost 3 months. I still have the numbing/tingling in my face and now tingling on my head/scalp area. Its beyond frustrating. I feel like my quality of life has significantly reduced. Still have the ear stuffiness/itchiness/pain and cracking/crunching noises in my jaw. My range of motion, swallowing and nose sensations have improved. However, I still have intermittent swallowing and nose problems ....

I'm working with a chiropractor as well -- this has helped my posture a bit. My TMJ specialist thinks there is pressure/hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and trigeminal nerve. I think fewer people experience these neurological symptoms and maybe just takes more time to get relief. I don't know.

My TMJ specialist will scan everything again in about a month to determine what's improved. If I'm still expericing the nerve issues, then he will put me on neuropathic pain meds (e.g. gabapentin).

ENT did a turbinate reduction to help my nasal breathing but I'm not sure how much that helped. Might just be more strange sensations that are neurological in nature.

Ctjackson--any answers or relief for you?

I hope you will both keep me posted and I will do the same.
