TMJ And Ear Pain
Jul 16, 2008
Hello all,

I am hoping I can get some advice here....

I have been having a lot of trouble with my ears since February. Well actually, the pain is in my right ear not so much in the left. There are a few complications though. I have suffered with hyperacusis for about 7 years (sensitivity to sound), I had Tinnitus Retraining Therapy years ago which seemed to resolve the problem. Four years ago I had an osteomyelitis infection in my jaw which has now been fixed, and problems to the nerves in the face which would cause me severe toothache. I had my teeth removed (except for a couple of impacted wisdom teeth) a few months ago to see if this would fix the pain in my teeth and gums - it did!!! :)

However, I keep getting a sharp stabbing pain in my right ear and a constant ache, severe sensitivity to sound, and a feeling of fullness. I can't even touched the ear and in the night it causes so much pain if i lie on it. I have seen an ENT specialist who has told me there is nothing wrong with my ear and I should look at TMJ or see a neurologist to see if it is nerve pain again.

I seen an oral surgeon who said he could find nothing wrong. He was unsure if TMJ was the problem. I am currently waiting to see a neurologist. My general doctor has started me on Tegretol to see if that will reduce the nerve pain - so far I haven't seen any benefit from it.

I am beginning to think it may be a problem with my jaw as when I speak it gets worse, when I first wake up in the morning it is worse and the jaw feels pretty tight. Tramadol reduces the pain for a few hours but it soon comes back again. I'm also starting to feel quite anxious and depressed and all of this is is starting to affect me now.

Does it sound like TMJ to you guys or something else? If so, what can be done to fix it?

Thank you in advance...
