Vaccination & Immunization Message Board

Vaccination & Immunization Board Index

I am 7-8 weeks pregnant and had chicken pox as a child. I have a 3 yr.
old and 5 yr. old. My 3 yr. old was exposed (preschool) to a child on
June 7 who came down with chicken pox that evening. He does not actively
play with this child but, may definitely have been in close contact. I
have 3 questions?

1. We are leaving on a big family vacation on July 15 that I would be
devestated if we could not go. Should I vaccinate my children for chicken
pox so that my 5 year old will not come down with them at our trip? I was
told to vaccinate them both and if they do come down with it it would not
be as severe. I am concerned to get the shot knowing the 3 yr. old may
already be a carrier of the virus. I would think this may just make him
more susceptible to a worse case. The pediatrician is recommending
immunization.

2. I have a 8 month old nephew who we are supposed to see this weekend.
Is it save for my children to be around the baby if we keep distance? Is
it safe if they are vaccinated 3 days prior?

3. As I already had chicken pox as a child, is my pregnancy in jeopardy
if either my children receive the shot or they actually get the virus? My
obgyn did not sound positive when she said that she believed I was safe.

Thank you for any help!
