when I said exercise I meant the get-all-sweaty kind. moving around is better then sitting but it is not the same as working out, nor does it have the same effects on the body.
Treadmill's are great but there may be better ways to work out for someone with bad knees and a lot of extra weight.
Swimming,water areobics, spinning/exercise bike/ elliptical(sp) trainer/ "nordic track" skier would all be easier on the joints and still push your heart rate into the 70 - 80 % of maximum zone or the max your doc recommends for you to work-out at.

Volumetrics is another excellent book that shows you how to eat lots of food feel full and cut calories. The whole idea of that and the other book i mentioned to get away from the diet mentality and obessing over food
